2020.10.29 21:36 FraughtQuill My computer randomly freezes without any real reason why

For the past month and a half, my computer has seemed to be doing everything in its power to make sure I can't use it for anything. It's gotten worse and worse every day, and I still have no clue where to begin fixing it.
Like the title says, my computer will very frequently freeze up and be unresponsive, usually for about 30 seconds, and at it's worse for several minutes.
I have tried SO many things to try and fix it, and I still don't know where to begin.
What is even worse is that I can't reproduce it! It freezes in different circumstances each time! This morning I thought it was because wallpaper engine was lagging it out, yesterday I thought it was firefox. A week ago I thought it was my wifi.
AND, it freezes to different extents! For example, the audio never seems to be affected. If I have a youtube video playing the audio will still be playing while the video itself is frozen.
Also sometimes my mouse will be frozen, sometimes it won't.
So let me list the possible causes and things I have tried.
Running out of system resources - Naturally, at the start of all this, I assumed my computer was just running out of ram, or my CPU was chugging or something. Nope, I had my resource monitor out and I would view the graphs. And each time it finally woke back up after being frozen I would see a small spike in the CPU graph. But nothing that would cause it to freeze my whole pc.
And my pc is pretty good. Not amazing. It has a GTX 980, a ryzen 5. 500gb nvme ssd and a 1tb ssd. 16 gigs of ram. I don't remember the specifics of everything else.
Turning it on and off again - Restarting my pc did nothing.
Updating my drivers - Someone suggested I update my drivers and see if that was screwing up anything. So I did, I ran windows update, and I meticulously went to device manager and checked every single one for new drivers. Nothing. I was all up to date.
Not doing school - Ok this is a weird one but I figured I'd mention it. I'm doing online school and my pc seems to freeze up THE MOST when I'm doing school work. Like I swear to god, when I'm trying to get math done it freezes every few minutes. While when I'm gaming it'll happen every half an hour. I had a theory that it was all the firefox tabs I had open. So today I kept it down to 4 tabs, and it was still freezing up.
Heh, even while I've been writing this long-ass Reddit post it hasn't frozen once. EDIT, 17 minutes into writing my computer froze for 2 minutes.
Ok, are your monitors freezing up? - Nope, each time my computer comes back my animated background will hyper speed for a few seconds to get back to where it was. If it was a monitor issue it'd come right back.
Also another thing - I don't know if it means anything. But my wifi has also been consistently disconnecting for about as long as the freezes.
Run my antivirus - I did and it got nothing.
Dust out your computer - If that was an issue my pc would be overheating. But I did it anyway. Didn't fix it.
Ok here me out, pull out your ram and graphics card and put them back - This was something my cousin suggested, and it worked! Sorta. For about 4 hours my pc didn't freeze once. But then the next day things were back to normal.
I've completely run out of options, and my patience is getting shorter and shorter. My computer is borderline unusable in this state. Please if anybody has ANY ideas. Even if you don't have a definitive answer, just ideas. I am down to try anything.

2020.10.29 21:03 DTG_Bot This Week At Bungie 10/29/2020

Source: https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/49722
This week at Bungie, there is just a lot going on right now.
What a week. It started out with a brand new ViDoc showcasing Bungie developers giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we’ve been cooking up from home. Now we’ll pause the TWAB for 15 minutes so you can go watch it in all its glory. Even if you already watched it, go watch it again. Don’t worry, we’ll wait on you.
Video Link
That was your first look into Season of the Hunt, as well as a deeper dive into Beyond Light, Stasis, New Light, and our plans for Year 4. We also mentioned that most Seasonal content is going to be sticking around throughout the year and showed off a new calendar for Beyond Light and Season of the Hunt. Start writing these dates in your calendars, or I guess like - programming them into your virtual calendars. You do you.

We followed that up by pushing out the Beyond Light launch trailer this morning featuring some good vibes and a familiar soundtrack. It’s one of the last action-packed previews of Beyond Light you’ll get before it launches in less than a fortnight. We'll pause the TWAB one more time so you can watch it, but this is it. No more pauses after this!

That’s all we got for you this week...
Nah, just kidding. We got a lot more to cover. Let’s get to it.

Progression Changes

The start of any new Destiny expansion begins with a Power climb as you experience the campaign and play through the story missions. After finishing that up and completing some additional quests and activities, you’re usually around what we call the “Soft Cap” and will need to start earning Powerful rewards to continue to increase Power so you can tackle some of the more aspirational activities in the endgame. After you reach the “Hard Cap” then there is an additional 10 Power you can earn through earning pinnacle rewards if you choose to hit the “Pinnacle Cap.”
Here are the new Power Caps you are aiming for when the next Season begins on November 10:
  • Soft Cap: 1200
  • Hard Cap: 1250
  • Pinnacle Cap: 1260
When you first log in next Season, all of your weapons and armor will be at 1050 Power or higher. If you have anything already over 1050 it will be unchanged, and anything under will be brought up to 1050. All new players will start at 1050 as well.

Powerful Reward Changes

We’ve heard a lot of feedback from players for more opportunities to earn Powerful rewards from the activities you enjoy most. We have a change coming that will allow you to have a chance to earn Powerful rewards from strikes, Gambit, Crucible, and from Seasonal drops all the way up until the Hard Cap. It will still be much quicker to continue to complete all the Powerful reward sources each week, but if you just want to play strikes or Crucible matches all day every day, you can continue to earn Powerful rewards.
We hope this helps you to continue increasing your Power during the period when you are still close to the Soft Cap and may find completing some of the Powerful sources like The Ordeal very difficult.

Tokens and Collections

Destiny is at its best when you are shooting aliens, getting loot, and becoming more powerful. That gameplay loop breaks down when the best way to increase your Power can be standing in the Tower, handing tokens to Lord Shaxx.
Starting next Season, gear received from Collections and turning in tokens and will have a lower Power than in previous Seasons. Gear earned through token purchases will be 20 Power below your Power Level and Collection buybacks will be capped at 1050 Power.

Economy Changes

Some currencies and items have changes coming either at the end of this Seasons or in the near future. Here is what to expect when you login next Season.

Materials with No Home

With several destinations going into the Destiny Content Vault, many of you have been wondering what is going to happen to the currencies found in the areas currently underneath the Pyramids. The simple answer is that there are no changes to these currencies in Season of the Hunt, and you will be able to continue to spend them at vendors normally.
Starting in Season 13, Phaseglass Needles, Alkane Dust, Simulation Seeds, and Seraphite will be no longer accepted by vendors. For those of you that still have unspent stockpiles at the end of Season of the Hunt, Spider will be kind enough to offer a small Glimmer exchange to take them off your hands. But you’ll realize the best value by spending them before that point, so make sure you turn in your stockpiles before the end of next Season.
There are other items that will be removed from your inventory at the end of Season of Arrivals. Some, like Faction Tokens, have not had a purpose in quite a while, and others, like Expired Ramen Coupons, never really had a purpose but held some sentimental value. We know that it might hard to part with those, but it’s time to let them go.
Check out this Help article for the full list of items that will no longer be in your inventory at the start of Season of the Hunt.

Bounties

Back in late April, we shared some plans on how to tackle the problem of “bounty fatigue.” We have made some shifts to seasonal bounties and reduced their importance on earning seasonal currency and seasonal progress. We’re happy with these changes, but still want to continue to improve the bounty system overall.
One of the plans we previewed was to eventually replace weekly bounties with a new mechanism to provide players with a set of non-expiring and account-scoped objectives each week that will grant lots of Season rank progress. We’re still working on that system and will share more on it before its targeted release of Season 13.

Season Pass

The Season Pass you've come to know since Shadowkeep is largely staying the same. There will be new weapons and armor to earn off both the free track and the owned path. One big change we are making is adding Bright Dust to the Season Pass.
As mentioned before, we wanted to change the way you earn Bright Dust and move more towards account-specific paths to give players with only one character significantly more Bright Dust than they've been earning over the last year. Here is the high-level look at the changes coming next Season.
  • Season Pass free path will now offer 7,500 Bright Dust
  • Season Pass owned path will now offer 3,000 Bright Dust
  • Weekly Bounties will now award 100 Bright Dust
With these changes, the vast majority of players will be earning more Bright Dust than before. One of our goals here is to not have a system that pushes you to try to grind out every weekly bounty on all three characters every single week. Whether you are a three-character player or only play a Hunter, Bright Dust will be more available when earning ranks on the Season Pass. We will also be making a change to the timing of Season Pass rank purchases which will be available starting in week five instead of week nine.
We have more plans for improving how you earn Bright Dust coming in Season 13 and will continue to monitor your feedback.
I’ve been talking a lot. Let’s change it up. Here is Design Lead Justin Dazet to tell you about some changes Spider is making to his wares and to answer a question we have been seeing about the customization updates we are making to your Ghosts.

Spider’s Dealings

Justin Dazet: Spider is going through some changes in Beyond Light. Though a notoriously savvy black-market dealer, our favorite four-armed friend has been largely the same for quite some time now. But the impending journey to Europa has finally given him a reason to tune up the materials exchange and make two key changes.
First, Spider will no longer be selling Legendary Shards. This exchange was removed mainly because it was not seeing enough use, particularly when compared with the other exchange offers. After reviewing player balances and the frequency with which this exchange was accessed, it was an easy decision to free up the space for something much more interesting.
In place of the Legendary Shard exchange, Spider is now selling Enhancement Prisms. These highly valued items come at a cost – 400 Legendary Shards per Prism – and he’s stingy with them so you can only purchase three a week. But we wanted to give those of you with higher balances a way to transmute your Legendary Shards into something a little more valuable than planetary materials and Upgrade Modules.
Second, we’ve taken another look at how the Enhancement Core exchange works and made some changes. The ascending cost mechanism has been removed, and in its place, Spider will now sell you five Enhancement Cores a day for fixed price of 30 Legendary Shards each. While this does limit the number of Cores you can acquire from him each day, we feel a consistent price is a clearer experience with less chance to accidentally spend large quantities of Legendary Shards.
More importantly it’s also cheaper. In the old purchase model, you’d pay 310 Legendary Shards for five Enhancement Cores (10, 20, 40, 80, and then 160). In the new model you’ll only pay 30 Shards each, which equals out to 150 Legendary Shards for five Enhancement Cores. So, while it does limit your acquisition rate, it actually will save you 160 Legendary Shards every five Cores!

Got to Go Fast

Finally, we’ve seen a few people wondering if you’ll be able to equip the Ghost mod Speed Demon with other mods like Guiding Light in the new system, and we have some good news for you: You won’t need to. Starting in Beyond Light all Sparrows, both Legendary and Exotic, will innately summon instantly, even without the Transmat Preloader perk. As a result, there is no need for a Ghost mod to impact this functionality, so Speed Demon was not carried forward into the new system.
If you’re already driving around a Sparrow with Transmat Preloader, you can keep using it and it will work just fine. Or you can pull it from Collections again and get two new perks. Newly created Sparrows will no longer roll on Transmat Preloader, so you have a chance to get yourself an extra perk and still retain that instant summon speed.
Hop on that newly instant-summoning Sparrow and zip on over to check out Spider’s new offers. He’s ready and waiting to wrap those four greedy arms around some of your wealth and make you a deal you can’t refuse.

Eververse

Starting in Season of the Hunt, Bright Engrams will now contain all Eververse content from Season 1 to three Seasons prior to the current Season (excluding content from special events like Festival of the Lost, the Dawning, etc.). Here are some practical examples:
  • Season 12: Bright Engrams contain all content from Seasons 1 through 9.
  • Season 13: Bright Engrams contain all content from Seasons 1 through 10.
As always, as you open more Bright Engrams, your chances for earning things you don't own increases. There will be instances of duplicate drops, but the Engram will be weighted to grant you things you might be hunting.

  • Flashpoints (Weekly Engrams should be claimed before November 10 or they will be removed).
  • All Destination Adventures.
  • World Quests from Year-1 locations, such as Enemy of my Enemy, Exodus Black, and Data Recovery.

PlayStation 4 COLLECTOR’S EDITION CODES

Earlier this week, we informed PlayStation 4 players who purchased the Destiny 2: Beyond Light Collector’s Edition that they may have received an email about a possible account lockout if they used their Collector’s Edition codes. The issue resulting in account lockouts for early code redemption has now been resolved, and players can now safely redeem their codes prior to November 10.

TITLES AND SEALS

With Moments of Triumph and Season of Arrivals coming to a close, players are strongly encouraged to claim and equip the titles located in their Seals so that they will correctly count as claimed.

KNOWN ISSUES

While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:
  • The Warlock’s top tree on the Dawnblade subclass can trigger the Icarus Dash cooldown when playing on PC.
  • Players can’t dismount from their Sparrow using the dismount button on a controller if their Ghost is out.
  • Some players report that they’re receiving the Baboon error more frequently.
For a full list of emergent issues in Destiny 2, players can review our Known Issues article.
Players who observe other issues should report them to our #Help forum.

We want to leave plenty for you to discover on your own in Beyond Light and Season of the Hunt and are excited to let the game do the talking, but we will still check in next week for one last TWAB before launch.
See you then!

A guide to the information that is needed to submit feedback can be found here.

2020.10.28 23:18 Madous Path of Exile's deeply hidden "Insanity" effects

Path of Exile is an action RPG, developed by Grinding Gear Games. Similar to other games in it's genre, Diablo and Torchlight, PoE has recently risen to be at the top of it's genre with constant content updates, active and receptive developers, and healthy playerbase. At it's core, PoE is a game about blowing up packs of monsters to grind for loot, allowing you to blow up even larger packs of monsters even more quickly. Not exactly creepy sounding, right?
Innsbury Edge is a unique weapon in the game. Similar to Legendary or Set quality items in other games, these items have special properties that cannot be found on others. Lovecraft fans may already know where I'm going with this...
The weapon is a reference to Lovecraft's "Shadows over Innsmouth", with the item's name being a portmanteau of "Innsmouth" and "Newburyport", the name of the city in which the story takes place. To date, Innsbury Edge is the only source of insanty in the game that is directly equipped by the player. In simple terms, if you never wield that specific weapon, you will never experience anything listed below. Combined with the fact that Innsbudy Edge is a fairly low level unique, this means most players may use it for a few levels while gearing up, and quickly discard it to move on to something better. The vast, vast majority of people who use the weapon also never experience any strange effects, as they are incredibly rare to encounter.
There is one other source of Insanity that I know of, however it's MUCH harder to encounter. When using a Master Sextant (an item that gives areas you explore random modifiers) there's an absurdly low chance that it adds the modifier, "Area is Alluring." The game does not tell you what "Alluring" is, means, or what it does. Simply put, all players in that area have the chance to experience insanity effects as if they were holding Innsbury Edge. If I were to say "Rolling this effect is rare", it wouldn't get the point across. You could use hundreds of thousands of sextants and will likely never see that modifier show up.
So, what does Insanity actually do? Here's where things get interesting. They don't make the character you're playing as seem to go insane, but rather the opposite. All the effects displayed are meant to hint that you, the player, are going insane. Let's take a look.
  • A fake de-level. At any point, regardless of how close you are to leveling up, you may hear and see the level up sound effect play. When you check your chat log, it would normally say "PlayerName (Class) has reached level XX". Yet, when looking closer, you may realize that the numbering is a little off... The notification says that you went down by a level, which is not possible without otherwise using a specific item to do so.
  • Entering an area that does not exist. Path of Exile launches a large content expansion every 3 months. With it, the game's economy is wiped and everyone starts back at level 1, totally fresh. Path of Exile also has a healthy speedrunning/racing scene, which the developers support. Long ago, they added little message notifications in global chat when a player is the first person to enter a specific area. That way you can tell SpeedMcSpeedster was the very first player to enter Endgame Boss Arena, for example. The global message while you're insane, however, lists your character being the first to enter an area that was patched out of the game several years prior. This message is only shown to you, nobody else.
  • Nonsensical chat messages. Chat messages presented by the game (not spoken by another player or character in-game) are simply white text messages without a name behind it. These are often used as simple error messages such as "You can't equip this item" or "This item cannot be used in this way", but while wielding Innsbury Edge, you can get some... interesting results. Other examples of these chat messages include lines such as...
You feel a cool breath caressing your neck…
You are being watched…
You have left something of great value in the dust…
Something moves in the shadows…
It is waiting for you… beyond the Forbidden Door… in the Place That Must Not Be Looked Upon.
You hear a sound in the distance.
PlayerName is the first character to enter Chamber of Sins (Level 3) - (The Chamber of Sins actually is an area in the game, however it only has 2 levels - at no point did it ever have a 3rd).
  • You start seeing double. A harmless body clone of your character (including paid MTX skins) appears in the area and wanders around randomly. The character cannot be attacked, spoken with, or otherwise interacted with whatsoever. Interestingly, the double does not appear to spawn holding a weapon, even though you must be holding Innsbury Edge to see this effect.
  • Heart-attack... Well, kinda. While idling in your hideout (a safe place where no enemies spawn), your character may flop to the ground, play their death sound effect, and you'll see the normal "PlayerName has been slain" chat message. If you click to move, your character pops back up and continues as if nothing happened. You do not suffer the effects of an actual player death (losing 10% of your experience) from this.
Where does this leave us? Why is this here? What does it do? The short answer is... We don't know! The developers have dropped extremely cryptic hints that there's still more to this that we haven't uncovered yet, with them even saying things such as "There are additional lines of recorded dialogue in the game that we can verify have never been triggered". Additionally, when the lead developer Chris Wilson was asked if there were any easter eggs in his game that were yet to be discovered, he simply confirmed yes, it was true. Many players speculate all of this has to do with an even more cryptic hidden fishing minigame, but that's a whole other post in and of itself.
Thank you to everyone who indulged in my nerdy interests. Credits for these findings go to poorFishWife and Jabanero for posting their discoveries!

2020.10.28 03:14 jabber_OW How I Learned That There is No Matchmaking in Ranked

Upon purchasing the game and downloading it I gleefully queued up for a quick skirmish with the AI. "Easy" should just about match my skillsets. After a short game I won by a landslide. Well, that offered little fun. No camaraderie, no congratulations, no blessed "gg". A single player game was clearly not my speed. And luckily, not what I purchased!
"Surely," I thought, "Multiplayer would offer me a starting point. Similar to my other favorite games, where a beginner such as I could practice against other beginners. A 'bronze' rank perhaps. Maybe an iron or plastic rank. A level zero, so to speak."
I was also very excited to discuss the game with other beginners. "Oho, what a splendid day for a battle. Did you just pick it up from the steam marketplace?" I shall say. "Heavens no!" He shall reply "I've received such a gift from mine own mother and father on this, the date of my birth." And such a laugh shall have we.
Ah! I was matched with an ally! Is this to be my trusted companion? A friend through the danger and strife? Perhaps our friendship shall carry on for years to come? "Hallo!" I cheerfully greet him.
"peasant dungeon spear rush defense comp" he replies quite bluntly. I was taken aback.
Very well, I thought, perhaps he's a bit of a studied beginner. Watches a lot of the YouTube or endeavors for high achievements one day. He is unusually prepared for a beginner. Offering an advantage for us no doubt!
"Of course, my good fellow!" I say with confidence as I frantically Google the mish-mash of words he's shoved into my once virgin chat. "Right away!"
Well, it turns out what he wanted was to end the game as quickly as possible. I thought that wasn't going to work. Why would a game be designed with that possibility? I was here for great battles, huge kingdoms, and well earned victories! I politely replied that I am unfamiliar with those terms and would like to play the way I know how. No reply.
The game began normally, I slayed sheep, sent my scout to die, picked berries, and lost a fight with a water buffalo. Suddenly, in a flurry of beeps and buzzes, every other player hit feudal age. Strange, I thought, I have built 2 houses, some fields, and a lumber mill, yet they have already accrued riches beyond what my Neanderthal brain could comprehend? Something was wrong.
Then my dearest ally sent a scout to my base. I only realized it was him because I couldn't get my villagers to attack it.
"dont play ranked" he said immediately. Strange greeting. Was this the classic wit I've seen in so many other online games? Surely, this was just another rather negative fellow. "we're going to lose" he said. A pessimistic one at that. I urged him to explain.
"matched wit first time player" he wrote to me, seemingly speaking to himself through the chat.
I then realized what is indeed the case.
"Surely this game has matchmaking?" I asked. "noe" he responded. "You are all at least at the bottom of the rankings, if not first time players?" I asked. "nop" he creatively responded again. My heart sank. I knew I shouldn't be here, but how could I have known? Now I've ruined everything for this poor illiterate.
Five minutes later, my 40 cavemen villagers lost a fight to 3 horseman from the distant future. My twig walls collapsed from pure shame, and my poor dear ally took his own life.
I have made mistakes I shall never forget.
Experienced players, if you have a good recommendation for starting online in aoe2 I would love to hear it, as it seems I went about it in the most incorrect way.

2020.10.27 20:49 smckenzie23 Delivery experience & build quality.

Delivery experience & build quality.
tl;dr: Delivery experience and build were great. Here is a long post since I know what it's like to be obsessed and want all the details.
I've been somewhat obsessed about electric cars for a long time. I've been following Tesla since before they delivered their first Roadster, and before that I was sure I'd pick up an Aptera when those were available. Finally pulled the trigger and ordered a Model Y Long Range on Sept 21.
Part of my obsession included anxiety about build quality. ~$80k CAD is a ton of money to plunk down on something with build defects, so it was a pretty intense decision for me to make. I love Tesla cars. But I'm not the kind of fan that can explain away some of the problems we've seen, so I've been incredibly anxious about the whole thing. For months I held off ordering and consumed every single thing I could find: here, the Tesla forums, youtube, traditional media. Every couple weeks I would swing by the local (Vancouver, BC) delivery center. I was really put off by some of the early build quality I saw: paint mismatch, fitment issues, curb rash on new vehicles.
But, the build quality improved. After a couple weeks of seeing cars that (externally) looked perfect, I pulled the trigger and ordered on Sept 21st, day before Battery Day. My thought was that the builds looked OK, and ordering then might get me a build and delivery before things got too crazy for the end of quarter, and slot me in before the flood of orders from people waiting for battery day announcements.
Ordering Process: The ordering process went well, and I was called by a SA the next day. So far so good. The order said it would take 5-9 weeks. As the 5 week date was approaching, I got to where I was reloading the My Account page multiple times a day looking for a VIN. Also, I was checking the order tracking spreadsheet multiple times a day and trying to make sense of which build combinations were going out, or why some people got VINs before others. Seems like there are no patterns I can understand!
The Wait: I was sure it would be closer to 9 weeks, and from some things I'd read, thought it could be pushed out further. But, without having a VIN assigned, I got the call from Tesla on October 18th. At that point, he said our car was here in Vancouver and when could we schedule pickup. Shortly after the 61xxx VIN showed up on the site. So the car could have been picked up 4 weeks from order, a week earlier than the estimate. I know there is a wide range of people waiting out there, but I'm happy mine came in early. In terms of the whole process, it was pretty great. It is frustrating that once you order things go dark for a bit. But it was still much better than the process of going to traditional car dealerships.
Customer Service: There has been a lot of complaints about Tesla customer service, and it seems like people have had a terrible time at delivery. Maybe because we weren't in the end of quarter push, but our experience was fantastic. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Right when we got there, they walked us to the car and gave us as much time as we wanted to check it out. Key cards were in the vehicle. Once we were satisfied, they were very helpful with the paperwork, setting up insurance (BCAA agent was onsite. Probably much different outside of BC). They helped us set up our phone apps as keys, answered all our questions, and were very helpful.
Build Quality: I went through the checklist, and had an idea of what I was looking for, having seen some ugly build issues in person. The gaps were all good. The white on the back bumper matched really well. The seats folded fine with the button. Everything was pretty flawless. The only thing is maybe the gap between the roof and hatch glass was a couple mm wider that it could be, but it was even.
Waiting for delivery
Driving Experience: I've test driven an S, a 3, and the Y. And I took a brief drive in a friend's 3. I knew a little of what I was getting into. But I have to say the car has far exceeded my expectations. It feels almost supercar fast at highway speeds. Passing and overtaking is nuts. The whole thing just feels so tight and planted. Suspension is firm, but I don't find it harsh on most roads. The steering is so quick. For a crossover, this really feels like a sports car. I was a bit sad about getting the Y over the 3 because that car is quicker, and handles a little better. I shouldn't have worried at all, because the way this drives is amazing. The one pedal driving and the torque and the quick steering combined make it feel like nothing else. I got a little sense of it in my test drives, but as I settle in to driving this thing I like it more and more. I thought I'd want the acceleration boost, but it is good enough I may never. It is so well put together as a driver's car. And Autopilot is amazing. I didn't get FSD, but coming from a car that didn't even have adaptive cruise, this is a dream on the highway. Also hit some stop and go traffic, and it was great to just let it do its thing.
Disappointments: I've only had a couple things that bother me so far. While all the gaps and alignment were perfect at pickup, after one day the right passenger door is now closing where it sticks out a few mm beyond the quarter panel behind. It definitely was flush on pick up, and definitely not perfectly flush now. It isn't too bad, but it is there. I'm more concerned about it changing than it being off.
EDIT: For the above, I decided to check out how scheduling a service in the app goes. Uploaded a photo, described the problem, and they are sending mobile service to my house on Monday (less than a week from today). While I don't love having the door slightly not flush, it is amazing to have a car where service comes to you. Huge plus.
Next, when the car is not charging and goes into deep sleep, sometimes the phone app won't wake it up. It gets stuck on "Waking up" and never comes online. It isn't a big deal, except that I couldn't turn on climate remotely if I wanted. I restarted the system with the scroll wheels, so we'll see if that fixes it.
All in, no complaints. Super happy so far.

2020.10.27 15:53 bobsmithcrabs On the cusp of almost going nuclear

I'm not in a good state of mind right now. I'm too cheap to pay for cable (have an antenna with crappy reception) so youtube is my source of entertainment for hours a day. I also spend a lot of time and effort into trying to find a date online. All of that combined with me being a loner, introvert, hermit, and anti-social has made me feel down in the dumps. The ideal me would not wake up and automatically turn the PC on and waste hours upon hours each day looking at stupid videos and wasting time trying to meet someone in the virtual world.
I want the future me to be excited about life, have goals and passions, do things outside, and form friendships and ultimately a relationship. I also want to be productive and feel good both mentally and physically.
I don't feel like I have the discipline to keep my ISP and greatly reduce my internet. However, I don't feel it is realistic to be without internet. It is nice being able to buy things, pay bills, learn, get my work schedule, etc.
So, I want to keep my mobile data and cancel my ISP. I'm debating on what data plan to use:
500mb/month *mobile data shuts off after data limit is hit [Cost $10/mo]
1 GB/ month *mobile data shuts off after data limit is hit [Cost $15/mo]
7 GB/ month *speeds reduced after data limit is hit [Cost $17.50/mo but have pay for a year]

The 7 GB is the best value but I am a cheapskate and I really want to limit my internet usage so... I am considering the 1 GB plan but it is scary being without internet!

My plan going forward looks like this:
Replace my youtube addiction with trying to learn spanish. I also want to join a gym and lift weights.
Do yoga each morning instead of turning on the computer first thing
Once a week- explore a new area/ do something fun
Try to be friendlier with strangers

Use internet for:
Paying bills, checking work schedule, weather, gps, when I need to quickly look something up (What movies are playing for example). No online dating, no youtube when at home. Can briefly watch youtube when connected to wi-fi. I am only watching videos from one channel and only 1-4 videos come out each month with an average time of 20 minutes per video. I enjoy watching the videos from "Bedtime stories"

I fear that without the internet and without friends; I may just replace my internet with other habits like excessive book reading or playing video games. I really need to make progress and not replace one bad habit with another one.
Feel free to comment :)!

2020.10.27 04:53 dev_yo3 Story Time: Comandante Rey de Reyes.

Story Time: Comandante Rey de Reyes.
Subject: Juan Reyes Mejia Gonzalez "Comandante Rey de Reyes" Rey de Reyes literally translates to "King of Kings". Here is a photograph of him.
Born November 18, 1975, Rey de Reyes at this point known as R1, was a commander in Los Rojos of the Gulf Cartel. In mid-2011, he was a candidate for being the plaza boss of the city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, but he was instead sent to command Miguel Aleman, Camargo, and Ciudad Mier, which were all war zones, where the fight against Los Zetas was raging. The position of Reynosa plaza boss was instead given to Samuel Flores Borrego "Metro 3" by the Gulf Cartel leader El Coss who favoured the Los Metros faction over Los Rojos. This triggered a war between Los Rojos, who allied themselves with Chapo Guzman and the Sinaloa Cartel, and Los Metros, loyal to El Coss, leader of the Gulf Cartel.
Rey de Reyes, still known as R1 joined forces with Rafael Cardenas, the nephew of Osiel Cardenas, to kill Samuel Flores Borrego of Los Metros, who had been given the plaza boss position. On September 2, 2011, two bodies were found, shot multiple times, in an abandoned Ford F-150 truck on the Matamoros-Reynosa highway. One of these bodies was presumed to be Flores Borrego, and DNA testing confirmed that Flores Borrego, Reynosa plaza boss, had been killed. This was the doing of Rey de Reyes or R1. This triggered an all out war between Los Rojos and Los Metros. However both sides still continued fighting Los Zetas, Los Rojos with the help of Chapo Guzman.
A few months later, a video emerged. It was filmed on April 2, 2012. It started off with the message "Comandante Diablo, Comandante Rey de Reyes, and El Chapo are planting terror in Ciudad Victoria. Watch out Zetas assholes, we are coming for you." The video showed sicarios arriving at a prison in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, and shooting dead two police officers. The video then cut to two Zetas being interrogated by sicarios in a wooded area. They are then both shot and dumped on a roadside. The video ends with another message saying "For all those Zetas assholes that are getting involved in Ciudad Victoria, the only person in command is Comandante Diablo under the orders of Comandante Rey de Reyes". However, this is just the start of Rey de Reyes, now operating under the name Rey de Reyes and his second in command Diablo.
A few days later, late at night in Ciudad Victoria, authorities discover 10 decapitated and dismembered bodies, along with a banner that says something like "These are only the first 10 of yours to fall, if you don’t stop messing in Ciudad Victoria, you and all your dogs will be dead soon. To Z-40 and his rats. Atte. Comandante Diablo under the command of Comandante Rey de Reyes". At this point, Rey de Reyes was barely fighting Los Metros anymore, and was receiving orders directly from Chapo Guzman, sitting in the mountains of Sinaloa.
On May 14, 2012 a video is uploaded to YouTube by an account called "anim trent", titled "Comandante Diablo and Rey de Reyes have fun with Los Zetas". The video starts with a sicario beheading a teen while he is still alive and then carving a "Z" on his stomach to show he was a Zeta. It then cuts to two older men, Zeta sicarios. One is shot in the head and then his arms and legs are chopped off. The other is beheaded and his head is held up to the camera, right before the video cuts to the end.
After this video is released, the identity of the mysterious Rey de Reyes is leaked as Juan Reyes, R1, the Los Rojos boss by Los Zetas. He was previously even speculated to be a pseudonym of Chapo Guzman. Diablo’s identity is also leaked as Hugo Alberto Banderas Padilla.
Two months later, a grisly torture video emerges. 3 women and a man, kneeling, are interrogated by uniformed sicarios bearing the Zetas emblem. A typical video, right? Except when they are asked their name they state "Banderas Padilla". Their mouths are sealed with duct tape. The Zeta in command turns towards the camera, laughs and says, "Look, here’s your shit family, Comandante Diablo". The Zetas then take a wood 2x4, and beat Comandante Diablo’s mother, sister, wife, and brother to death with it. After they are beaten into a literal bloody pulp with the 2x4, the Zeta commander says "To the dirty motherfuckers of Sinaloa and the Gulf, they don’t have balls. Atte. the ones who gave the Gulf their power, Los Zetas".
On July 25, 2012, another video emerges, it slowly starts with someone singing a creepy tune, the kind used in horror movies, sounds very much, a lot like Habanera by Maria Callas. Apparently the translation of the part he sings is:
"Nothing helps... neither threat nor prayer. One man talks well, the other's mum; it's the other one that I prefer. He's silent but I like his looks”
The man is Comandante Diablo, Rey de Reyes’ second in command, whose family was beaten to death by Los Zetas. He turns towards a Zeta, who he has captive, and he tells him to apologize for what he did. The Zeta says "I’m sorry Comandante Diablo and El Senor Comandante Rey de Reyes, forgive me for being part of the filth" Diablo then leaves the room, playing the creepy song that sounds like Habanera on a speaker (I watched the video, the song is very very creepy).
As the song plays, Diablo’s sicarios take a knife and cut out the Zeta’s tongue, then they proceed to stab him and cut him all over, and take out what looks like to be internal organs, and finish by beheading him. Comandante Diablo returns then says "You already fucked my family up but no problem we all know what kind of work we are into. You will cry blood and we'll see who's more of a badass fucking assholes and all the dirty motherfuckers "Zetas" are gonna get fucked up along with all their families like you already did to me so now it’s my turn".
By now, Los Metros has all but defeated Los Rojos, as Rey de Reyes was only fighting Los Zetas, and was working de facto for the Sinaloa Cartel. Because of Los Metros being the only dominant Gulf Cartel faction, Chapo Guzman had made peace with them, and their leader, El Coss, supporting their fight against Los Zetas, giving them weaponry and money, while Rey de Reyes and Diablo also fought the Zetas, effectively also ending the Rojos vs Metros conflict with a Metros victory. However, there were certain elements within the Gulf who blamed Chapo for everything that had gone wrong, all the way since Osiel Cardenas’s capture to the Gulf-Zetas split. These men have killed Comandante Guerra, a Gulf Cartel commander who let Sinaloa drugs pass through his territory without any fees.
To try and fix the situation, it is decided a meeting would take place in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, where Chapo Guzman and Mayo Zambada would be present, representing the Sinaloa Cartel, and El Coss’s lieutenant Mario Ramirez known as "El Pelon" along with another Gulf Cartel high rank, Miguel Villareal "El Gringo". Unknown to Chapo or Rey de Reyes, was the fact that El Pelon is one of those men who have killed Comandante Guerra and are secretly plotting against Chapo. However El Gringo is not a plotter. The date for this meeting is set as August 8, 2012. The day before the meeting, a squad is sent to Matamoros on the request of Chapo Guzman to prepare for the meeting. This squad is led by Rey de Reyes and Juan Jose Esparragoza Moreno "El Azul", the Sinaloa Cartel leader.
By 7 pm, August 7, 2012, the squad, led by Comandante Rey de Reyes and the old timer Sinaloa capo El Azul reaches Matamoros from Ciudad Victoria to prepare, and set up the meeting spot. As they are driving towards the safehouse, around 8 pm, a series of blockades is setup around the city. Unbeknownst to Chapo or Rey de Reyes, it is El Pelon who has ordered these blockades, because he is one of those men in the Gulf, who are secretly against El Coss and Chapo. The squad runs into one of these blockades, where they are identified and receive heavy fire. They speed away in their trucks, thinking it is Los Zetas who have attacked them, trying to disrupt their peace meeting with the Gulf Cartel. However, they are informed by an anonymous voice on their radio frequency that certain elements within the Gulf Cartel have betrayed them (I want you to guess in the comments who the anonymous voice was). Back in Sinaloa, Mayo informs Chapo Guzman about the situation, and he decides to send backup, however somehow, the backup never made it to Rey de Reyes and his squad.
The squad is chased by sicarios working for El Pelon, who shoot at their trucks, which makes the lead vehicle with Rey de Reyes, and the Sinaloa Cartel capo El Azul, break down. The squad gets out and returns fire to the Pelon’s sicarios with machine guns and grenade launchers. Miraculously, no one in the squad is killed, however some are wounded, and El Azul is shot multiple times. Rey de Reyes drags him to safety inside one of the other trucks, (in a Corrido about El Azul, it’s mentioned "Y tu Rey de Reyes, Vamos pa adelante, Gracias Matamoros, tu un dia me salvaste", which roughly translates to "And you, Rey de Reyes, thanks for Matamoros, that day you saved me") and the squad hastily speeds back, heading south. They are chased for about 50 kilometers out of Matamoros, after which they lose El Pelon’s sicarios. They reach Ciudad Victoria, where Rey de Reyes radioes his old friend Comandante Diablo for help. Comandante Diablo arrives along with many sicarios, and they take the squad away to safety.
Because of this the Sinaloa Cartel ends their alliance with El Pelon, however they keep their alliance with El Coss, and El Gringo, who was also supposed to be at the meeting, as he sincerely informs Chapo he was not the one who betrayed the squad, but El Pelon. Comandante Rey de Reyes severes the last of his ties with the Gulf and he and Diablo brand themselves as Sinaloa Cartel from then onwards, directly receiving orders from Chapo Guzman.
Just over a month later, El Pelon gives up El Coss to the Marines, who is captured September 12, 2012 without firing a single bullet. El Pelon now becomes the leader of the Gulf Cartel. El Gringo, however, incredibly angry because of Pelon’s betrayal of the squad and El Coss, breaks away from the Gulf and starts working with Comandante Rey de Reyes.
Heavy fighting continued between Comandante Rey de Reyes, and El Gringo on one side vs El Pelon and his men on the other. Both sides also simultaneously fought Los Zetas heavily. It was during this time period that Heriberto Lazcano (Z-3) was killed by Mexican Marines. The fighting continued for around 6 months, until, one night, on March 10, 2013, El Gringo’s convoy was ambushed by forces loyal to El Pelon, in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. A three hour gun battle took place, with no Mexican forces arriving until well after the fighting. Two civilians were killed according to the Mexican government, and more than 50 sicarios combined from both sides were killed. El Gringo was one of the men killed that night.
Soon after his death, the Sinaloa Cartel kidnapped several of Pelon’s sicarios, tortured, beheaded and dismembered them, and then dropped their limbs and heads outside a Gulf Cartel safehouse along with a message. The message read:
"Only as a traitor could you be somebody, Mario Pelon. You betrayed those who fed you just to gain power. However, the Metros decided to trust you, and you ordered an attack from behind on my other associates in Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas. I'm referring to the man who had my total trust and was the chief of security for El Coss, El Comandante Guerra. You knew that by getting him out of the way you could weaken El Coss's organization, and like a good, treacherous dog, you hit him from behind. Then you set up my principal associate, El Coss, with the Navy in Tampico. Finally, you also betrayed El Gringo; you knew he was in your way to becoming the only leader. And I'm not forgetting what you did to my people when I sent El Azul, El Rey de Reyes and El Comandante Diablo to Matamoros to fix those problems you were having. Again, you attacked from behind, you attacked them when they entered Matamoros. You told me it was Los Zetas; El Azul almost didn't make it, had it not been for El Rey de Reyes. You have failed the Sinaloa federation. That's why, starting right now, the Sinaloa Cartel will cease having any connection with the Gulf Cartel. La Frontera Chica will be my next target. You and all that bunch of Metros who are only good at betrayal, repent all you can because soon I will be in those places, Miguel Aleman, Reynosa, Rio Bravo and Matamoros are too much for you, more than you can handle. Only a capo can control them. You're just a dog who came from the ministerial police.
Atte. El Chapo Guzman"
Chapo sent heavy reinforcements to Comandante Rey de Reyes in Tamaulipas, who fought El Pelon in a prolonged fight for control of Tamaulipas. Eventually on August 17, 2013, just over a year after when he had betrayed Rey de Reyes on that night in Matamoros, El Pelon was captured in a joint operation by the Mexican Army and Marines. Chapo’s reinforcements returned to Sinaloa after this.
Six months later, on February 22, 2014, headlines broke out around the world. The most wanted man on Earth, El Chapo Guzman had been captured by Marines in Mazatlan, Sinaloa. After his capture, Rey de Reyes did not have the backing of Sinaloa anymore, as he had no deal with Mayo or Los Chapitos, and he could not have predicted Chapo would escape by Christmas the next year, so Rey de Reyes ditched the name Comandante Rey de Reyes and started being known again as El R1, leader of Los Rojos. He and his remaining men, along with remaining cells of Los Rojos, together were once again called Los Rojos. In November 2014, two narco-banners appeared in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, a few days apart.
Both narco-banners announced the alliance of Los Rojos with a Comandante Kelin of a Zetas faction called Los Zetas Unidos. Comandante Kelin was Rogelio Rolando Gonzalez Pizana. Z-2. Supreme Leader of Los Zetas after Z-1 and before Z-3. He had just been released from prison after serving 10 years. However this arrangement didn’t last very long. One week after the second banner was placed, Z-2 was killed by Los Metros along with family in Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
Comandante Rey de Reyes is still alive and free. He will turn 45 years old in three weeks. The DEA offers $5 million for information leading to his capture. Here is his latest photograph.

2020.10.27 02:40 cheekydickwaffle69 I could really use some outside perspective

WARNING: LONG
I want to be as vague as possible as my friend is also a redditor. Let's call them Peri. Peri and I have been friends since elementary and we always got along great. I loved them, they loved me, I loved their parents. But in the last few years things have taken a turn. My friend always had a bit of a temper, but it really ramped up in highschool. We both started dating and would interact with each others partners and Peri was a real bro and helped me see my partner Kay outside of school as my parents were insane and hated Kay without having even met them. Things started getting odd. I was used to Peri's temper but they usually dialed it back when I was around as I have past trauma that causes me to panic around anger. They would pitch fits when they lost at any game, pick fights with their parents around me and take them from 0 to 100 in seconds and begin screaming matches. Their parents usually tried not to engage as they understood my panic but at times they had no choice. After a few years of this Peri was diagnosed with a type of bipolar disorder and started medication. Some worked and some didn't, but it was hard to tell as they very rarely took their meds when they needed to, skipping days at a time insisting they were fine before some blowup would happen and they'd be talked back into their meds. This always confused me as Peri is in the middle of getting a degree in the mental health field and should understand the importance of medication. Finally one day the big incident happened. We were hanging out and they were having a pretty chill day. We'd gotten some good food and we're watching our old favorite youtubers and chatting. The conversation was uncomfortable though, as they'd sprinkle in oddly grim topics and such, then go back to normal chatting. It finally started as Peri got their leftovers and went to reheat them, saying something along the lines of "this will be an ok last meal" and I sat their like "???" They got back and started eating and we continued chatting before Peri told me they were going to kill themselves that night.
Before I get into this I want everyone to know that I understand suicide and suicidal tendencies are no joke. I've been suicidal and self harming (clean for about a year now though) from a very young age and understand the thought process and need to end your own life.
The way Peri was talking was..... Odd. it seemed less like they were actually intending on doing it and more like they just wanted to hear me tell them why they shouldn't and tell them how much they meant to me and their important in others' lives. They ended up taking out a packet of their pills and counting them in front of me saying things like "well there's only 15 here not really enough to kill me but it's worth a shot" and "you can go downstairs if you want so this doesn't bother you"
I panicked, I pleaded, I tried taking the pills, and ended up going to get their mom. They dialed it back when their mom came in as I don't think that's what they wanted. After a while everything was settled and I got a ride home where I proceeded to break down to Kay and the family member I lived with.
I was a mess for the next week as Peri would randomly text me things like "I should have just gone through with it" and "I really need to die" and I would try to help them as best I could every time they reached out.
About a week and a half later I had a therapy appointment and was going to discuss everything that had happened with my specialist. About 10 minutes in I started getting more texts from Peri along the same lines but these seemed a little more intense.
I couldn't take it anymore and just started sobbing. My specialist went and fetched Kay from the waiting room to help calm me down and Kay looked at the texts and explained what was going on. Then my specialist said that if she is made aware of a suicidal person in need she legally has to alert authorities to ensure the safety of everyone involved. She asked for Peri's address and as I was a bit of a mess Kay took my phone and read it off to her.
After a little bit I began to calm down but then my phone started blowing up with angry texts and calls from Peri asking why TF I called the cops instead of just answering her and they're fine and don't need help and that was unnecessary. Then when I got a call from Peri's mom Kay decided I didn't need this and took my phone into the waiting room to answer and see what was all the fuss. I stayed behind to cry a little more with my specialist and when I came back out to the car I could see Kay was tearing up a little bit and refused to tell me what had been said. I knew it couldn't have been good as I'd heard screaming coming from my phone and the waiting room as they tried to get out to the parking lot as not to disturb anyone. Peri ended up apologizing when I explained it wasn't me who called and the legal ramifications my specialist explained. But I still ended up avoiding their house and their mom for about 6 months after that as I was just too nervous to encounter her after sending cops to her house for no reason.
It stung a lot as their mom had been like an adoptive mom to me for years but after that nothing was ever the same.
Fast forward and we got to go on a trip together thanks to the generosity of a very kind family member. The only problem was Peri was a few pills short for the 10-day trip and would run out towards the end. They insisted it was fine and we headed out.
Almost right off the bat things got negative as our plane was delayed about an hour and when the announcement came over the loud speakers Peri immediately slumped in their seat saying "well this trip already sucks" I was confused as delays are normal and I've experienced delays much longer and honestly I really just like being in airports. They're fun and I thought Peri felt the same way as we'd discussed the true neutral chaos that is an airport and the fun of people watching in one. I tried to ease the tension by joking around and lightening the mood and talking about how exciting this was to travel out of the country for the first time but after a couple dirty looks and mumbled answers I just gave up and shut up. The plane ride wasn't too bad, I wasn't seated with them but close enough we could quietly chit chat if we wanted. We land and the location was wonderful The people were great and the activities were amazing. But there was always a cloud in my mind wondering what was going to set off Peri next. Sometimes something would go wrong and we'd just brush it off but other times if some little thing went wrong it would just ruin Peri's mood for the whole day and they'd be unable to drop it no matter what fun thing we had scheduled for later. I learned to mostly just kind of ignore it but in a positive way if that makes sense. I'd still talk as if everything was going okay and it would either bring them out of the funk or it would just make them sink lowered almost out of spite it seemed. One event that really hurt was one night our group planned to go to a really nice restaurant then head to the hotel to freshen up and go to a really cool club. The only problem was the club had a dress code and Peri didn't have shoes that fit the dress code. I decided to stay behind from the fancy dinner and went to the corner store by the hotel and picked up a mini sewing kit and altered a pair of my own shoes for Peri to wear to the club. When they got back from the restaurant all I got was an "oh cool" and they left. I ate some leftovers for lunch and went to bed disappointed but happy that Peri would enjoy themselves. The next morning all Peri had to say was "the club sucked" and I gave up. Overall the trip was very fun but I still had a lingering anxiety through the whole thing about what would set Peri off next, and it was hard to enjoy things completely without a sense of nervousness. We did have some genuinely fun moments as friends though.
I guess one of the last major problems is How things have developed in the last few years. Peri got Kay and I into weed. I was wary as any kid growing up in the Bible belt would be. But it actually turned out to be a saving grace for me. It helped me with my insomnia and I found it would almost immediately cure my bouts of nausea and migraines (I learned the medical reasons for these about a year ago but again trying to keep it vague) Peri used it for art. Which was nice as they claimed they got some excellent inspiration from the grass. It kind of helped me with drawing too but nothing too major. Peri turned into every stoner's worst friend after getting heavily into it. They would almost completely smoke out anyone who had them over but be completely stingy with anyone visiting them. They wouldn't clean out their pipes or bongs, and the worst was when they visited my house to smoke. Whenever they came over it was the first thing they brought up to do they didn't want to do anything but smoke my grass. As stated above I lived with a family member who at the time I thought was very conservative. He has a very sharp nose and can identify almost any smell so to combat this I would light a candle, blow through a stoner tube out my window, and immediately spray the area with smoke odor eliminator. Peri would come over and head straight to my stash and start pulling incriminating things out before I could even close my door or light the candle and would "forget" to blow out the window several times in a row with a "whoops, lol" leading to me having to hose down my room with the spray every time. But if anyone forgot to blow out the window in their room they would lose their shit. They also began driving much more recklessly in these last few years. Peri used to be a very careful and safe driver but now they tailgate, roll stops, speed, and insist on driving even if they've recently smoked or drank alcohol. It really freaks me out being in a car with them so I've usually volunteered to drive when we do hang out. I'm not even really sure what I'm asking anymore. I mean I do still genuinely love this person but in the last year or so I just can't stand being around them and it's not even that they're a bad person or anything they just really freak me out a lot. Even just texting them gives me anxiety and I feel so dumb. The last few weeks they've been wanting to hang out, and luckily I've had the excuse of having way more hours but I still feel incredibly guilty and I don't know what to do. I really just don't know what to do.

2020.10.26 18:43 AmericanNewt8 Boned: Problems (but not too many) in the US Air [and Space] Force!

No. You don't frighten me, Mollari. If you try to go up against our forces, you'll lose.
Yes, your ships are very impressive in the air, or in space--but at this moment, they are on the ground.
Right--they're on the ground. But they can sense an approaching ship from miles away. So what are you going to do, Mollari, blow up the island?
Actually--now that you mention it--[pulls detonator from pocket]
No!
[presses detonator]
Babylon 5, explaining the vulnerability of aircraft to ground attack in typical hammy fashion
Hello, and welcome to another episode of "AmericanNewt8 explains the global military situation at present in a convenient, possibly easy-to-read guide". Maybe I should make a YouTube channel or something. All the cool kids [and a lot of idiots who know nothing about military equipment] are doing it. Anyway, today we have the US Air [and, for the moment, Space Force--they haven't fully separated yet], and, surprisingly for once, a somewhat more positive message. I'm sorry this one took so long; I've been busy for the past month or so, but I figured I should get this one out I already had 80% done before talking about Turkey and the war in the Caucuses, which are likely to be shorter, more current, and arrive sometime in the next week if all goes as planned.

Current Effortposts In My Series:
  1. What you [might] need to know about South Korea's ludicrous arms buildup
  2. We shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches.... uh, what do we do after that again?: The Perilous Defensive Position of Taiwan
  3. "You've hit another cargo ship? The Problems with the US Navy: Not all of them begin with "Seven" and end with "th Fleet"."
  4. Will China's PLAN survive contact with the enemy?
  5. Biden's New START and modern nuclear war
  6. Boned: Problems (but not too many) in the US Air [and Space!] Force
  7. Erdogan Sallies Forth [inserted largely on account of the recent breakout of a war between Armenia and Azerbaijan]
  8. Begun, the Drone Wars Have: Why You Should Pay Attention To This "Tiny" War
  9. First And Last Stand Of The Tin Can Navies [ASEAN + Australia and the smaller adversaries China may contend with]
  10. --Unnamed-- effortpost on Japanese military matters, mostly about how weird the JSDF status is
  11. --Unnamed--effortpost on Indian military matters, and why they can't focus on China or buy anything that works
  12. --Unnamed--effortpost on the rest of the PLA, mostly the air force though
  13. --Unnamed--effortpost on the rest of the US Armed Forces, mostly talking about how the marines are changing and the Army's new love affair with INF-busting weapons
  14. Conclusion?

1. Our Pride And Joy

America's Navy may be its key instrument of power projection abroad and in some ways the most important service branch, but the one that is by far the greatest beneficiary of American skill, the apex of our capabilities, is without a doubt the US Space Force. From Day 1 the US has had a commanding lead in the field. Mind you, that's not saying that nobody's ever challenged or exceeded the US in limited areas for limited periods of time--the early 1950s were about the last time that happened though [aside for commercial launch vehicles from around 1980-2010]. In the modern era, it is very rare that buying something other than an American-made aircraft or rocket makes any sort of economic or strategic sense [political is of course a different matter entirely]. The US Air Force has generally benefited from high, consistent levels of investment and has had relatively light burdens placed on it operationally [though in recent years post 9/11 this has changed to an extent], and it has developed into one of the best-trained and most doctrinally sophisticated forces in the world. More on that later. Anyway, the Air Force is probably the best-loved branch politically [Marines might be more respected but they get budgetary scraps], at least of the military as a whole, and it ends up with more funding, smarter people, and a much better QOL as a result. In fact Air Force personnel are usually treated to quite a bit of envy and ribbing about how much better their conditions are than their Army, Marine, or Navy counterparts.

2. Aging Equipment [again!]

Guess what? The same problem that seems to afflict most of the US military [and, for that matter, most European, Latin American, and non-East Asian militaries] is aging equipment from the Cold War finally wearing out. In the Air Force, this takes a number of different forms. Often, it's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but even then airframes do wear out eventually and need replacement and a lot of them are getting to that point.
Logistics, Support, That Kind of Thing
One of the least glamorous parts of the Air Force, logistical and support capabilities are rapidly aging. The primary airframe the Air Force uses for these is the.. wait for it... Dash 80, as the C-135 whose commercial variant is better known as the Boeing 707. It was a very impressive aircraft, but it was designed in the 1950s. Even though we've reengined the C-135 with more modern engines, and done some serious overhauls, they're getting pretty long in the tooth. Most notably we have the 398 KC-135 Stratotankers which make up the bulk of the US midair refueling fleet, which are joined by 31 E-3 Sentry AWACs, a number of specialized RC-135 derivatives doing everything from SIGINT to hunting for nuclear weapons and 17 E-8 Joint STARS. While these were produced up until the early 1990s, the airframes are aging and they need replacements, and the sheer quantity of aircraft is likely to cause trouble. There are also other aircraft that have to be replaced in the mid-term [by the early 2040s] like the C-5 Galaxy and the KC-10 Extender, but these are somewhat less of an immediate concern. There are some C-130 Hercules replacements also needed but those are largely being done with newer versions of the same aircraft.
Bombers
The B-1 Lancer is first on the chopping block, due to high maintenance costs and time [it generally takes 120 hours of maintenance for an hour of flight time]. That represents 60 bombers, on paper anyway, and a good chunk of the USAF's supersonic strike capability. However, cutting it should free up resources for new hardware, and in fact new USAF budget proposals suggest rapidly retiring the B-1. The B-2 Spirit is also on the chopping block due to high price and high maintenance demands, but it can't really be replaced until the B-21 Raider shows up. There is also a need to find a replacement for the B-52, but nobody is really sure what that looks like and it's much less urgent--the B-52 will soldier on for the indefinite future and may well hit a full century in operational service. Even if one runs into the "airplane of Thesus" the fact that you could well have fourth or fifth generation B-52 pilots flying on 90-year-old aircraft is, to be honest, kind of neat.
Fighters
The F-15 and F-16 originally took flight in the 1970s and are still seeing interest today, though the modern F-15 and F-16 are very different beasts from their originals. However, the overall fleet is starting to age--primarily the F-15C fleet operated by the US Air National Guard which does air policing in the US. This is why the Guard is actually first in line for new F-15EX aircraft and has even received brand new F-35s [that, and the fact that the Air National Guard is actually pretty integrated with the Air Force]. F-16s are also starting to wear out; the USAF still operates over a thousand of the type. They are set to primarily be replaced with the F-35, though, with around 1500 aircraft on order. They will also replace the A-10 [along with drones, I suppose], and I'll take a moment to say that the A-10 is heavily overrated, there's a reason the USAF wants to dump it, and it's notorious for friendly fire incidents. Its job would be better done by drones or even aircraft like the Super Tucano.
Trainers
These are, guess what, also wearing out. The USAF currently operates over 500 T-38 Talon trainers, but it already has a replacement lined up for this aircraft which was first flown in 1959. It just adds to the list of things that need replacing.
ICBMs
Also should mention these, I suppose. The US is currently operating the Minuteman-III) as its sole ground-based nuclear deterrent/ICBM, and these 1970s-era missiles have survived their replacement, the LGM-118 Peacekeeper. They have to be replaced as well, and the USAF actually recently awarded a contract to do so to Northrop Grumman [though there are issues with that mentioned below].
Maintenance
One side-effect of all this is that the Air Force has increasingly high demands for maintenance which are simply not met, which combined with a shortage of maintainers [partially due to good outside pay but mostly because anecdotal reports suggest life as an Air Force maintainer is terrible] means that the Air Force has a poor readiness rate, especially because a lot of airframes aren't in good condition to begin with, having been worn out by decades of use.

3. Procurement Woes... fixed?

So, the Air Force has had a pretty troubled history with procurement in recent years. By far the most infamous one is the F-35. Well, yes, the F-35 was a procurement disaster. Another Redditor has done a great service by writing up the account Ash Carter [Secretary of Defense under Obama] gave of the program. It's long [full version here] and probably doesn't give a full account as it is Carter's memoir--but I'll just pick out one of the most significant parts of it:
At one point of the meeting, after we'd made it abundantly clear that the grossly inflated price for the JSF jets was unacceptable, CEO Bob Stevens casually said to me, "Well, if you tell me how much money you have, I'll tell you how many planes you can buy."
I was taken aback. Rather than negotiating a fair price with us, Stevens was behaving as if his company were entitled to all the money the taxpayers could afford. And although he obviously had a per-plane price in mind, he didn't care to divulge it openly, nor would he agree to a fixed-price contract holding him to it. I found this cavalier attitude offensive. With deeper disrepute, the JSF program would go down the political drain, and we wouldn't be able to buy any of these needed aircraft.
With all this in mind, I let his question hang in the air unanswered for a moment. Then I replied, "How about none?" With that, I walked out of the room. "None" was a reasonable prediction in the political climate surrounding this out-of-control program.
However, the F-35 was a pretty uniquely messed up procurement program due to suffering from what I'd broadly call "jointness", where interservice procurement made things less efficient.

The Air Force on its own has had some pretty impressive procurement messups though. Look no further than the KC-46 Pegasus, a tanker designed to replace the KC-135 [as mentioned above loads of these are getting retired in the next couple years]. The first sign of trouble probably should have been when the first program to replace the tankers with the KC-767 [now the KC-46] was cancelled on account of a bribery scandal involving the CFO of Boeing offering the procurement official an executive position. The second sign probably should have been the whole bit where, unlike its competitor, the A330 MRTT, the KC-767 didn't actually exist. And when the A330 won the contract bid, Boeing of course protested and, ultimately, got the contract evaluated again, with [at least per Northrop Grumman's claims, who was running a joint bid with Airbus] requirements rigged for the KC-767, and, finally, almost a decade after the program started, Boeing won the bid.

Except there was the small problem that Boeing hadn't built the plane yet, which turned into a large one. Ultimately the program was marred by years of delays and major technical problems. It only recently finally began delivering aircraft to the Air Force, years late and over-budget [though the USAF did manage to claw quite a bit of it back from Boeing].

However, there are some positive signs that future procurement will be better. Besides the F-35 being saved, there's the example of the T-X program, which is to replace the elderly T-38 Talon trainer. It invited foreign competition to the field, featured vigorous competition, and resulted in an actually effective aircraft--developed by both Boeing [of course] but also Saab--yes, the Swedes have a significant hand in the trainer jet likely to equip much of the world.

In particular, something very interesting the US Air Force is doing is diving heavily into computer design and open systems architecture. What this means, in short, is that they'll design new planes with a heavy emphasis on doing detailed computer design and simulation, only finally building an aircraft to demonstrate it works IRL--which of course cuts costs substantially--and they'll try to build common hardware and software that will work in any number of aircraft. The overall idea is to make aircraft inexpensive, easy to design, and modular. The Air Force even has a buzzword for this already, the "Digital Century Series", referring to the last time the Air Force very rapidly built a whole bunch of aircraft on a relatively common hardware platform. Whether this will bear fruit remains yet to be seen.

4. Fighting the Peer Conflict

The USAF, for the past thirty years, has not faced a peer competitor. Arguably it didn't even face one before that--the Soviet Air Force was no match for what the USAF could field, as was demonstrated quite well in a number of conflicts. The good news is that the USAF has had a long time to build up a lead, and is still far ahead of China or Russia, further ahead than the Army or Navy is by a long shot--Americans like their planes and electronics. For an illustrative example, China'sJ-20 stealth fighter has been produced in a quantity of... 50; while the USAF has almost 200 F-22s and is ordering over a thousand F-35s. The Su-57 barely even flies and is nowhere near peer to what the United States can field despite whatever scary articles you might have read. The bad news is that only recently has the USAF actually begun preparing to fight a peer conflict, which will tax it in different ways.

The main vulnerabilities the Air Force has in a peer conflict are more logistical and operational than regarding the quality of its aircraft or pilots, which are moreless unmatched. The first problem is that readiness isn't fantastic thanks to the War on Terror burning through all the ancient Cold War aircraft that the USAF has operated, and yes, aircraft do wear out. In fact, large numbers of F-15Cs operated by the US Air National Guard have been grounded due to age and fatigue. The shortage of maintainers also plays a role here. There's also the problem that the US Air Force is still quite vulnerable on the ground in any peer conflict; especially to precision strikes with ballistic and cruise missiles--the US Air Force has downsized considerably and now only has a handful of bases for both political and budgetary reasons, but that means that, when facing, for instance, China, the USAF must rely heavily on just six airfields--Osan, Kunsan, Misawa, Yokota, Kadena and Andersen [maybe bring that to 9 by adding USMC and Navy installations, which field fewer and less capable aircraft].

Thus, the primary challenge that the USAF faces is a quiet one--ensuring that it can operate from dispersed locations, at high opstempo, and repair its facilities rapidly. This is really also the biggest question mark in terms of the USAF's performance, but there's some reason to be optimistic here--the USAF is aware of the threat and is actually working to solve it. However, ultimately only changes in the political environment [the addition of bases in the Philippines or Palau, or the development of readied airfields in Japan] will fix the basing problem. Better ballistic missile defense will probably also help here. Russia or China will probably have poor luck against the USAF in the air; seeking primarily to deny the USAF free reign and thus the ability to support ground offensives, but they could cause significant damage by hitting ground facilities, and everyone knows it.

There's also the question of surface-to-air missiles; which have driven quite a bit of concern the past few years as China and Russia field increasingly capable systems like the S-400 and HQ-9. It is feared that the sophistication of these weapons could create "A2/AD bubbles" where the USAF and USN are unable to operate. While the access bubble does still look quite real for the Navy, recent developments have seriously called the efficacy of surface-to-air missiles into question--particularly the fact that the Israelis and Turks seem to be able to almost ignore them, or at least their shorter-range counterparts. The destruction of Armenian S-300 launchers by Azerbaijan with Turkish drones is certainly an ominous signal for anyone thinking advanced air defenses would keep them safe. How good the full-scale systems are against conventional targets is still unknown, but my guess is much less effective than the marketing--and keep in mind that despite years of concerns, SAMs have only been successful from about 1960-1980, and even then relatively minor adjustments in strategy seemed to significantly mitigate damage--so it's unclear how concerned we should actually be about such technology.

There are also questions about whether or not the USAF is operating the right mix of aircraft for the job, and these are valid ones. The USAF is buying new F-15EX, which has literally been described as not survivable after 2028 [though there is a case for the plane as a carrier of standoff weapons or a homeland defense fighter], and still operates the A-10 [an aircraft now mostly known for a number of notorious blue-on-blue (friendly fire) incidents] which, if used in a modern environment where the USAF didn't have total air supremacy, would simply not be able to survive. Yes, there's a reason the USAF wants to scrap the A-10, and no, the GAU-8 is cool but it doesn't even kill columns of modern main battle tanks. Unless you're primarily planning on fighting North Korea, the A-10 is close to useless(ly dangerous). The B-1 has also been highlighted as obsolete, largely due to high maintenance costs. However, the USAF is working hard to scrap these aircraft as fast as politically feasible.

5. New Technologies

The Air Force has always had a certain inclination towards adopting the newest, shiniest technologies, and at the moment there are a number of interesting concepts that it is exploring. I'll talk about two of the most significant ones [especially combined] here.

First, the Air Force is seeking to create future aircraft entirely virtually--using highly detailed computer models to design numerous types of specialist aircraft, and only building prototypes to test the results that simulations produce. Their latest trainer, the "eT-7", uses this methodology--the "e" is supposed to designate that it was designed this way. There's also a move towards using common avionics and software for a variety of different aircraft. Figures high up at the Pentagon have discussed a "Digital Century Series", modeled after a chain of fighters rapidly developed in the 1950s for a number of different roles, from the F-102 interceptor to the F-105 fighter-bomber. This could potentially create numerous new aircraft rapidly; a shift back towards the times before the 1990s where a single fighter project took the entire attention and budget of the Air Force. Nobody is really sure how this will pan out but it looks quite promising. In particular, the fact that the USAF was able to take its new prototype fighter jet into the skies a year after it was originally envisioned is stunning--and suggests that this potential return to the old days of the 1940s and 1950s when new aircraft showed up every year is not just a pipe dream.

Second, the Air Force is investing in UCAVs [Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles], most notably in the Skyborg concept. The goal is to develop a low-cost drone that can both deliver additional weapons to target while being accompanied by a manned fighter--a sort of drone wingman, which is cheap enough to be expendable [thus serving a secondary purpose, soaking up enemy air to air missiles]. Numerous companies have been awarded contracts to develop UCAVs and this program is looking quite promising, so expect to hear more of it in the future.

6. Drones

Drones are a rather interesting topic and one that I'll most likely get into more detail in on my next two posts specifically regarding Turkey. The US was one of the pioneers of UAVs, with the other big player in the field being Israel--in fact the US has bought Israeli drones from time to time, though of course China and Russia have also established a presence, without even mentioning Turkey. The US has a number of drones for different purposes--largely for reconnaissance of different types and precision-strike capability. It has the RQ-4 Global Hawk, for reconnaissance, the MQ-9A Reaper, for strike missions, and the RQ-170, which.... well, probably something involving reconnaissance, it's half-CIA so who knows. However, the US may not have kept up on the ongoing drone revolution, which is actually something I can't really blame them for since the 'revolution' only started in January. Yes. Last January.

This 'revolution' began on January 5, 2020, to be exact, and was led by an unlikely candidate: Turkey. They say necessity is the mother of invention, and this was certainly the case for the Turkish drone program. After the US refused to sell Turkey drones on account of the fact that they might be used against Kurds [use of Turkish drones suggests they definitely are used against Kurds], Turkey decided to make their own drone program with blackjack and hookers--or, well, just drones. Their DIY effort didn't really garner much attention until sent to Libya, but investment in their program skyrocketed, largely for two reasons. First, Turkey has been largely barred from major hardware acquisitions from the US and, to an increasing extent, Europe. Second, Erdogan deeply distrusts the Turkish Air Force and has dramatically cut pilot numbers through his multiple purges of the service. Third, Turkey is competing out of its class, against Russia, the UAE, and other major regional powers.

Once it arrived in Libya, it suddenly became clear that the Turkish drone program was much more important than previously thought. In many ways it bore the primary responsibility for turning the war around from what looked to be almost certain defeat for the UN-recognized GNA into a state where whether or not Haftar could survive was in question. In particular, it came as a great shock to most how easily Turkey defeated the very systems that were designed to shoot down UAVs--the Russian Pantsir in particular, which has been destroyed in great quantities with few Turkish casualties to show for it--and with the sticker price for a Turkish drone less than half of the Pantsir systems they kill, it could well revolutionize warfare. Experiences in Syria, and now in Armenia, where Turkish drones have destroyed hundreds of main battle tanks and casually destroyed SAM systems from some distance above, continue to bring into question just how vast the drone revolution is going to be. I'll cover this in more explicit detail in my next two posts.

However, the USAF is watching and learning--its main difficulty with drones is more political than anything. Drones are often considered less important than manned aircraft by a leadership that largely flew manned aircraft [particularly fighters at that], and it is the bottom tier of officer recruits that fly drones [though, interestingly, some drones are actually flown by enlisted pilots] and even then there's usually a shortage of RPA pilots--that's why a few are flown by enlisted in the first place. Whether or not they'll take these lessons to heart, only time will tell, but the history of the Air Force leaves me relatively optimistic on the matter--more than many other services, it's willing to embrace change.

7. Nukes

The US Air Force runs two legs of the nuclear triad--the air and ground portions. The first is dominated by, believe it or not, gravity bombs--mostly the B61. This weapon has been sitting around in the United States [and Europe under nuclear sharing, in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and Turkey] for a while now, the first variants being made in 1968, and has recently been updated to the latest B61-12 variant, which offers high precision [as precise as JDAMs, not that it's likely to matter in most situations where nukes are being dropped] and flexibility--the bomb can be deployed from low altitudes at high speeds, and from within the internal weapons bay of the F-22 and F-35 [not to mention the B-2 and future B-21], so it's not as dumb as it might sound. Air-launched weapons also have useful features like the ability to recall them once launched, which isn't an option for missiles, along with fitting into doctrine for a tactical nuclear war. While I could go on about the lack of air-launched nuclear cruise missiles [which hopefully will be fixed by the end of the Intermediate Forces Treaty] it's not a big deal.

The main concern here [and perhaps a suggestion that procurement is still messed up] is the ground-based deterrent, which currently consists of a few hundred Minuteman III missiles buried in the northern central United States. These missiles, like much of the Air Force, date to the 1970s and have outlasted their supposed replacement--the MX Peacekeeper. These missiles are finally approaching end of life and are to be replaced by a new ICBM system. This process is... problematic. First off, it was a sole-source bid because Northrop Grumman acquired Orbital ATK Systems, the primary American producer of solid-fuelled rockets and missiles, and this resulted in Boeing pulling out of the competition. Second, the cost seems rather high, at least in my view, with lifetime cost estimates of as much as $90 billion, with development alone amounting to $13 billion at sticker price. It positions the cost of rebuilding the ground-based deterrent as comparable to the US Navy's program to replace the Ohio-class submarines with the Columbias. The ground-based deterrent has also lost substantial importance as sea-launched and air-launched weapons have become much more accurate and capable of fulfilling the ground-based counterforce mission [which arguably died with Peacekeeper], and it remains the most vulnerable portion of the triad. What good it does is largely as another independent nuclear deterrent and one that soaks up enemy warheads in the event of nuclear war that could be directed towards other targets. A disastrous procurement here could cause problems for the Air Force you will see in the future. My suggestion would be either to continue modernizing the Minuteman IIIs or aim to replace them with the cheapest option possible--something like, for instance, a land-based Trident missile [as if the Air Force would ever allow such a thing to be built]. All the ground-based deterrent needs to do is be there, be a credible threat, and soak up enemy fire. That's it.

8. Space Force

The Space Force is now its own service branch, but as it really hasn't emerged yet I'll cover it here. In fact, just recently, the Space Force enlisted its first trainees. This is somewhat less in my area of expertise; but at the moment things look fairly promising. While the Space Force sounds silly it's almost certainly the part of the military you interact with the most in your daily life on account of running the GPS network. They also operate a variety of communications satellites and the system for monitoring ballistic missile launches, among other pieces of hardware. Expect to hear more about these guys in the future, as space becomes a potential battlefield--we've seen the deployment of a space-based anti-satellite weapon by the Russians just recently, and numerous powers now field anti-satellite missiles along with jamming equipment that can blind reconnaissance satellites, so space is becoming much more militarily important. I don't have much more to say about these guys at the moment, though, other than noting that they're already talking about being even "less physical" than the Air Force--translation: Less mandatory exercise--and they're teaching classes about space law, which is neat I guess. The main downside of the Space Force is that it's going to be very small, around 20-30,000 people, which is half what even the Coast Guard fields, and that could lead to problems with maintaining personnel and inefficiencies with redundant missions, procurement, and the like.

9. Conclusion

The USAF has problems; particularly with aging equipment and manpower, but it seems to realize that most of them exist and is moving to address them. Political constraints mean that the USAF is stuck supporting a variety of obsolete platforms and investing its large budget poorly in new ICBMs and poorly managed tankers, and procurement continues to be a struggle for the USAF, though nowhere near as bad as with the US Navy. Drones have the potential to revolutionize warfare and the USAF is working to develop capabilities in that area, albeit maybe not as fast as some other players in the field, and digital design promises more aircraft designed and produced faster--much, much faster. The USAF faces logistical challenges in a peer conflict, but nothing insurmountable--though the work there is likely to be painful and sidelined because it's less interesting than buying shiny new toys. The Space Force seems to be going along well though they could face some problems in the medium term from losing access to the USAF's resources--political, financial, and of personnel--until/unless they develop into a larger, more influential service. On the whole, though, the outlook for the USAF, at least, looks quite bright--a hope spot, along with the Army and Marines, that the serious problems of the Navy will not cripple the entire military capability of the United States.

2020.10.26 13:10 VladtheMemer [REQUEST] [STEAM] Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition (€19.99)

Hi, everyone! I am requesting GTA IV The Complete Edition, which includes the base GTA 4 game and the two DLCs that came out for it, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, along with some performance improvements and changes to the radio which I plan to undo with mods.
The story of how I started playing through the GTA series is pretty simple. During lockdown I would stay up all night every 2 or 3 days watching Vinesauce Joel's GTA streams, starting with Vice City, one of the first games I had ever played but never beat. I had so much fun watching those streams that I had to go back and finish VC for myself, which was awesome despite all the limitations that game had like no free camera while driving, slightly clunky controls and shooting and some infuriating missions. The radio, nostalgia, map, story and gameplay once I got used to it more than made up for those negatives though and playing it felt really good and fun.
I finally beat the game and I wanted to play more, so I started watching Joel's San Andreas streams and I had a lot of fun with that game too, only one of the 3D trilogy that I still go back to today. Then I went on to GTA III, which was still an ongoing series on Joel's streams. That game was rough, but it had its own charm and atmosphere thanks to the low-budget radio (excluding the Scarface soundtrack, that's anything but low-budget) and its story and style.
As for GTA V, I beat that game a few years ago and I still have memories of sharing my screen with a friend on Discord, adding shitty custom songs and going on rampages with the riot mod at 20-something fps on a tiny window or just driving on the highway listening to the amazing hip-hop or talk show radio stations (though this game had the weakest radio overall in my opinion, at least 3 has an excuse and sounds unique today). I also played a lot of GTA Online with another friend after Epic gave it away, I stayed up all night downloading that game cause speed was throttled due to how many people were getting it (the Epic store was down for a little time too before that which is funny to me, thousands of people were flocking to get it).
Now, the requested game finally, GTA IV Complete Edition. I had been thinking of playing it just to have some closure knowing I beat every GTA game on PC and now that Joel has just started a playthrough on his stream it seems like the perfect time to do it. His first stream of this game was hilarious (he has uploaded a second stream to Youtube but I haven't watched it yet) and I recommend checking his stuff out. I used to play this game a lot as a little kid, restarting over and over and thus never finishing it, same for the Episodes From Liberty City stories. The farthest I got in IV was killing Playboy X, doing the bank heist and hiding Manny's body, I don't remember much about EFLC. I know the area surrounding your first apartment like the back of my hand due to how many times I've started from scratch. I always loved playing with the physics by jumping out of a car at high speeds, shoving, punching, shooting and fighting NPCs, spawning helicopters and jumping out once I got to max altitude and throwing bricks around (you could pick up bricks and throw them wherever the hell you felt like in this game, how does nobody talk about this?!). I think I've fucked around like that in this game more than I did in any other GTA, maybe only GTA V comes close.
I would love to finally beat this game and the DLC stories and I would truly appreciate it if you guys could help me out here. I realize this is a long-ass read, but I just wanted to prove that I know these games, I have a history with them dating back to my first gaming memories and that I will play and enjoy this game if I get it from here. I could write entire essays on each game but I think it's time to wrap it up and leave it to you to decide whether or not you want to gift me Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition

2020.10.26 09:53 riddywrites How I came to hate one of my best friends (Terrible roommate/possible narcissist story)

So this might be a long one...
I've been at my wit's end lately. I've been sleeping poorly, neglecting responsibilities, and having the occasional mental breakdown. I believe that I have been manipulated, perhaps abused, and certainly taken advantage of, by someone who I thought I could really trust. So, in lieu of therapy, which I'm in desperate need of but don't currently have access to, I'm going to vent to complete strangers on the internet in the hopes of maybe being a little less frustrated.
tl;dr my best friend became a toxic narcissist and, beyond that, the world's worst roommate.
About this time a year ago, I (20M) became friends with someone at college. We met through a mutual friend and pretty quickly became "besties," spending almost every day together at times, and bonded over shared interests.
It was great! I enjoyed her company a lot; she laughed at all my stupid jokes and we were there for each other when we were having bad days. She treated me probably nicer than anyone else has. We became very close very quickly.
But keep in mind, we were always just friends.
In May, we moved into a cheap house, renting it with some other friends. It's a pretty good setup, all things considered, and I have no major complaints as far as my other roommates (or the place itself) go.
But because COVID happened, I left for home as soon as it was Summer. We continued communicating over Snapchat for the next few months and things were pretty normal, until she started complaining about our mutual friends/roommates. She was claiming that they were essentially bullying her, being authoritarians and showing a whole new side of their personalities. She told me she'd lost respect for them.
And this all was very distressing for me, as it was incredibly hard to imagine these people acting the way she described. But in the back of my mind, I had my doubts. I knew she had a tendency to over-exaggerate, to spin wild yarns about how horribly everyone treats her. But I shoved those doubts aside. I chose to believe her, to be on her side, because I was worried for her.
This was enough on its own - but she had grown incredibly needy. She texted every day, constantly asked me to call or talk, and getting upset for ignoring her, etc.
It felt like she thought I was her boyfriend.
And I'll be honest, it started to make me uncomfortable. And it wasn't the first time, either. She had a propensity to hug for a little too long, to get mad if I didn't say "I love you" back, to ask me to play with her hailet her play with mine. I'm honestly embarrassed that I put up with all this, because if I were more confident, more sure of myself, more secure in my identity and all that, I would know not to let people make me uncomfortable just to not upset them.
Now that I think of it, most everything was walking on eggshells with her. I knew by this point that she was incredibly unstable and emotionally fragile, even suicidal, and I feared that not giving her what she wanted would send her over the edge again. But I was two states away - I had my own shit to deal with. This was simply too stressful for me.
So eventually, after checking in with my other roommates, who helped me see past the narrow perspective she'd been feeding me, I decided to put my foot down. I asked her for distance, expressing my discomfort at the closeness of our relationship and But I made sure to be clear that we were still "besties" and I still wanted to chat every now and then.
Nevertheless, she didn't take it well. It was a betrayal to her, proof that I didn't care about her, that I was a liar, etc. It was her trust issues given merit, her "prophetic" dreams about me calling her ugly come true. But I did my best to push against that narrative. I guess she still doesn't see things my way.
Anyway, that's when everything got much, much worse.
She downloaded several dating apps and had many, many matches. She started hanging out with new friends, which, I'll be honest, did annoy me a bit. It seemed like she was shoving it in my face how cool her new friends (one of whom had the same favorite band as me) were and how much fun she was having. Then she started going on dates. (It might be relevant to mention that she's got a history of manipulating boys simping for her, asking this one desperate guy to buy her something one time. That was weird.) In the span of a single day, she had her first kiss with one guy, then lost her virginity with another.
This is pretty much when communication cut off entirely. She started ignoring me. And with this distance, I started to see the red flags that I'd been missing all along.
Pretty soon after that I found out she suddenly had a boyfriend, and then I started seeing him, along with another guy, in her posts. Call me judgmental, but I could tell from looking at them that these would not be people I'd be able to get along with.
And here's the thing that really sent me over the edge, folks. Here's the thing that made me cognizant of our inevitable falling-out.
One of her baby rabbits died. And I was in love with this little guy. I named him and everything - I was gonna help take care of him. But he died. And as if that weren't bad enough, a few days later (the day before I arrived, in fact) she posted an interesting video to her Snapchat story.
In the video, she was situated over what appeared to be a campfire by a cliff, holding a bag. Bafflingly, to boss music from a video game (one of my favorite games, which made it feel like a stab at me personally) she threw the bag over the cliff, into the darkness of the night. The caption read "RIP [the bunny's name]"
I had a visceral reaction to this video. And by that I mean it gave me something between a panic attack and a fit of rage. I furiously berated her, demanding an explanation and praying that it was a misunderstanding. Her excuse was some newfound spiritual beliefs, but it was still very disturbing to see that poor creature be treated in such a way. She even opened that video the next day while sitting next to me, laughing and saying "this video has such chaotic energy."
So, I arrived, and immediately became aware that she was a terrible roommate. And she's been nothing but trouble since. She's a completely different person now, compared to who I was friends with six months ago.
We tried everything. We wrote a roommate agreement and arranged a meeting - it seemed to have gone well, we were all reasonable and she agreed to be better. But those promises were empty. According to her, we were being "immature."
She, her boyfriend, and their third wheel are here every morning and night. They drink, they smoke, they yell, they slam doors. They behave like middle schoolers. Without exception.
For simplicity's sake, I'm going to refer to them as the Three Stooges for the remainder of this post. (Weirdly the two guys have the same name so it's easier to lump them in together to avoid getting confused)
At the risk of this post becoming too extensive, I'm going to compile a list of my many grievances with the Three Stooges. Here we go, buckle in folks.
Stooge #1 (former best friend):
Stooge #2 (boyfriend):
Stooge #3 (boyfriend's friend):
Things have escalated over the last several months to the point of outright hostility, and I honestly fear that it may get physical in some way.
She said that October 24th was her "intended move-out date," that the three of them had been looking for a place. But the 24th came, and she pulled a 180.
So I finally gave up. I said "fuck you" and threw any respect I'd had out the window. And it felt good to do that. All this time, guilt has been eating away at me, but I'm done being the one at fault. I do not care for her anymore. I will never be able to see her the same way again, nor will I be willing to give her a second chance. This is it, it's over.
I hate her. It took so long, and it took so much - but her self-fulfilling prophecy of assuming everyone hates her finally paid off: I hate her. And I want her out of my life.
That said, the last message that I sent her was a long one detailing my complex feelings, assuring her that in spite of everything I wish her the best and urging her to seek professional help. But it's beyond me at this point. I've done all I can/care to do.
Advice would also be appreciated.
Thanks, and I hope y'all are having a great day. Stay safe out there.

2020.10.25 19:36 random_scavenger 335 (170V/165Q) AWA: 5.5 : From 309 to 335, my GRE exp as a working professional, who graduated 5 years ago

Hi folks,
First of all, I want to thank the people on this lovely sub for being so forthcoming with your experiences and tips. Having been able to achieve my target scores, I thought I would pay it forward by sharing my experience, along with resources I used, challenges I faced and some strategies that helped. This might be a long post. So I will also frame a TLDR summary at the very end.

A brief background

I am a non-native speaker who graduated in engineering a while back, and I currently work as an analyst. I felt that the next step in my career would require a business degree (not necessarily an MBA). I decided to prepare for the GRE over the GMAT since it was accepted at all the schools/programs that I aimed for, and since it played to my strengths at verbal (Yup, I studied engineering and work in analytics but I suck at quick math. Sigh...)
In terms of time spent, I prepared for a bit more than six months in total (roughly around 1.5 - 2 hours a day of preparation on average) , while pursuing my full-time job.

Two things I wish I knew when I started

1) Have a clear target GRE score
When I started off , I had this ingrained desire to approach as close to the perfect score as possible. I guess this is common among a lot of test takers as well. Throughout our lives, we are made to believe that the more marks we get in a test, the more we stand to gain from it. While this dictum generally holds true, there is an important caveat in the case of the GRE.
The GRE is just a means to an end.
The GRE score is just one part of your profile that admissions committees will use to evaluate your application. They are at best, used as a filtering mechanism. While a good GRE score will help you "fit in" with the applicant pool, it won't help you to "stand out". So, don't obsess over scoring some arbitrary number. Research the courses and schools that you want to apply for. Most of them have publicly accessible information about their mean/ median / max GRE scores, often grouped by section. Analyze them and decide on a target score that is ideally a couple points above the mean/median.
(Note: Also be aware that for specific demographics, like international students from over-represented countries for example, the GRE scores required might be lowehigher. Connect with alums with a similar profile as yours, from your target school before deciding)

2) The scores and preparation times that you see on GRE and other GRE forums are not indicative of the general distribution
Just like how people post only the most flattering photos of themselves on Instagram, most posts on exam forums are going to be from people who got a great score. I will be honest. I don't think that I would have made as detailed a post if I had scored, say less than 320. While the tips and strategies from top-scorers definitely helped me a lot, there was a period of time where seeing experiences of people who scored 330+ after studying for a couple of weeks made me feel completely inadequate. For me, my perspective changed when I connected with alums from my target schools and I realized that there are a great many more types of people who got in, with a correspondingly diverse array of GRE scores and testing experiences. This might sound trite but each of us are running a different race. Maybe you are preparing for the exam while working two jobs to support your family. Maybe you are an overworked undergrad wanting to make it to grad school. So, don't base your expectations on scores/ preparation times of others
PRO-TIP: Take the diagnostic test as early as possible
I took my free ETS diagnostic test sometime around March of this year. I got 309 ( 150Q:159V) I was a bit disappointed but it helped set my expectations right and helped me identify that the greatest room for improvement lay in my quant scores.

Quant - How I tackled my weakest link

While I won't say that I am bad at math, I was definitely terrible at the specific kind of quantitative aptitude asked on standardized tests. Partly due to my anxiety, I had difficulty in employing mental math and my knowledge of math had become extremely specialized to my field of work (For instance, I was well versed at Statistics and Data interpretation. However, I fumbled on even the most basic geometry questions in the beginning) I realized that I needed to build my quant foundation from the ground up, particularly for topics like geometry, permutations and combinations etc that I had not touched since I left school.
After trialing a few options and inquiring with peers who had taken the test, I purchased Magoosh's 6 month subscription. What I loved the most about the course is the structured learning path that it provides, building up from foundational concepts, all the way to applying them in specific types of GRE questions. This does have a drawback that some of their videos can seem extremely long-winded. I usually, skimmed through video lessons on topics that I was already strong at, by setting the playback speed to 1.5x.
With regards to practice questions, I started off solving all the Magoosh questions (around 30 every day) through their customized testing feature. While they are decent practice, I realized later that some of their questions are unnecessarily tough. In the sense, they require a kind of approach that is highly specific, and would easily take more than 5 minutes to solve even if one were perfectly aware of the concepts used to solve them. My advice would be to skip all the "Very Hard" quant questions on Magoosh.
Next I turned my attention to the Manhattan 5lb book. This book is gold for gaining practice on the types of calculations that appear on the GRE. I solved all the problems in the book except for the Advanced Quant section (Thank you so much u/gregmat for the tip to avoid this chapter. Saved me a ton of time) Similar to the Magoosh "Very Hard" questions, these problems are needlessly convoluted and are not the type of questions that you would typically encounter on the GRE.
Finally, during my last 2 months of prep, I focused exclusively on the OG ETS material. This was when I was introduced to u/gregmat's wonderful YouTube channel. I highly recommend his quant walk-through and strategy videos. His strategies on quantitative comparison, back-solving and the b-d method were especially helpful.
While I used to score in the low 150's in quant in my first few mocks, it gradually increased over time and in my final few mocks, I was scoring in the range of 162-167.

Verbal - Building my vocab and Reading muscle

Though I was a non-native English speaker, I had always loved reading and writing in English. Hence, I had a better starting point than most on my verbals. One huge stumbling block for me was the somewhat obscure vocabulary employed in the section. This is especially frustrating since in some of these questions - it was pretty much unsolvable unless you knew the meaning of a particular word. Fortunately, there are an array of free resources to build up your GRE vocabulary. I will list the five that I used most frequently:
1) Magoosh GRE Vocabulary Flashcards App: I can't overstate the value of this app to building your vocabulary. It is insanely well-designed. What I loved about the app is that it always has a suitable example sentence where the word is used in context. Similarly, the definitions of words that had many meanings were narrowed down to their most common connotations on the GRE. I completed all the Basic and Common word sets. I did not complete the Advanced ones but did go through a few sets now and then when I found the time.
2) Vince's GRE Vocab Cartoons App: This app is criminally underrated in my opinion. Thanks a ton, u/Vince_Kotchian for making this. There are some hilarious cartoons with visual imagery that will etch the word into your memory (Check out the cartoons for a few gems like "cumbersome", "bemoan" "inculcate" and "venal" I laughed my ass off at the hilarious stories he came up with XD )
3) The Guardian - Live World News, Sport & Opinion App I believe the best way to learn vocabulary and to develop your reading comprehension skills is to read articulate content written by well-versed journalists. While the New York Times, The Atlantic, the Wall Street Journal etc are great repositories of such content , all of them reside behind a paywall. If you are someone who can't afford to pay for these subscriptions, I highly recommend that you download this app/ read their website. The Guardian is completely open-access as they believe that everyone should have access to information. Their opinion pieces are top notch quality and you would easily encounter GRE words spattered throughout. Their articles are also a great way to practice your reading comprehension. 10/10 would recommend.
(Note: I found their policy of making their content open-access to be very admirable and I subsequently donated to them via their app. If you find their content helpful and you are able to afford it, I would humbly request you to donate what you can so that they can keep their content accessible for those who cannot :) )
4) Gregmat's Test your GRE Vocabulary Knowledge playlist This playlist is a great resource for anyone wanting to test their GRE vocab awareness. I binge-watched this during my last week of GRE prep. The best part about them are that they are very dense in words that are most likely to appear on the GRE. I can confidently say that I was able to answer 2-3 questions right on the actual test solely because I had learnt the meaning to a few words while going through this series.
5) Vince's GRE Vocab Compilation and Curation u/Vince_Kotchian has built this solid collection of words aggregated from different sources color-coded by how likely they are to appear on the GRE. Great for browsing through towards the final stages of your preparation.
For strategy, I highly recommend Gregmat's videos on his YouTube channel. His `pairing` strategy for Sentence Equivalence questions was a game-changer and in general, he helps breakdown how to approach verbal questions in a very lucid and fun manner. Apart from that, I can't reiterate how important it is to build your reading muscle. Make it a habit to pore over articles from reputed newspapers and not just skim through it. Force yourself to identify the key idea/ supporting evidence, contrary view points etc in any content that you read. This is something that can only be attained through rigorous practice.
Last but not the least, avoid third-party verbal questions like they are the plague. Most of them are terribly bad. For instance, Manhattan 5lb's verbal questions are so ambiguous and confusing that you would end up acquiring wrong habits and a terrible headache. Among the third-party verbal questions/mocks, Magoosh's was the closest to the actual method of reasoning employed on the GRE but even that, I think I should have avoided in hindsight.

AWA - Not much prep at all tbh

I focused the least on the AWA since I had a decent flair for content writing. I went through ETS's guide and some of their sample rated essays during my last week of preparation. I watched a couple of Gregmat's videos on structuring my Issue and argument essays and browsed through some of the topics. And that was it. I knew I did well on my AWA but I was pleasantly surprised to get a 5.5. Honestly, I am not the best person to give tips on preparing for this section since I felt I had a huge head start when compared to most people.

Mock and Practice Questions

When it comes to mocks, I took the free mock tests from Manhattan, Barron's and the Economist. I also wrote 4 practice tests on Magoosh, and the following ETS mocks (PP1, PP2, PPP1, PPP2)
My scores started off in the low 310's and gradually picked up. I hit a plateau at around 320-325 and it took a couple of months to finally hit a 330+ (I think it was on my third Magoosh mock)
I gave all the free mocks in the beginning after I had completed watching the Magoosh videos. I alternated between the Magoosh Mocks and PP1 and PP2. I saved PPP1 and PPP2 for the last 2 weeks of prep.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE ANY THIRD-PARTY MOCK RESULT WITH A HUGE PINCH OF SALT. Most of them, in my experience have far easier quant sections than the actual GRE, and verbal questions that are extremely poorly-phrased . Just use the mocks as a way to gain practice on writing the actual exam and use the scores as a very rough ballpark.
As much as possible, write mocks in the same way that you would write an actual GRE. This includes:
- Do NOT skip the AWA section in a mock It is very tempting to do so, but trust me - spending an hour writing two essays really takes a toll on your mental agility and makes it that much harder to focus for the nest 5 sections. If you are going to take the GRE without ever having written the AWA, be in for a rude surprise as to how long and taxing the test can be
- Do not google answers: I was guilty of doing this initially. Mostly, to avoid embarrassment of getting a low score. Remember that it's better that you get this news now than when you are writing your exam
- Do not take long breaks: Pretty self-explanatory
Last but not the least, remember that you are all taking this exam during a global pandemic in very uncertain times. Hence, be prepared for some setbacks and difficulties and don't be hard on yourself. In my case, I got the dreaded COVID19 a week before my initial exam date. I had to quarantine, lost 2 weeks of study time and had to reschedule to a date which coincided with a hectic period at work. I felt devastated but was fortunate to have friends encouraged me to not give up. At the end of the day, this is just one small aspect of your profile that in no way defines your worth or your intelligence. Give it your best shot but if things don't go well - it's not the end of the road. You can always take the exam again. You've got this, friend :)
As promised the TLDR version
1) Have a clear target GRE score
2) Don't base your expectations on scores/ preparation times of others
3) Take the diagnostic test as early as possible
4) Magoosh for Quant fundamentals, Manhattan llb for practice, ETS Quant is the holy grail, u/gregmat for strategy
5) Magoosh vocab app, Vince's vocab app, extensive reading, gregmat's vocab videos for verbal
6) Be wary of third party verbal questions, They usually suck
7) Take your mocks but don't trust the scores that you get on third-party tests
8) Be prepared for the current uncertainty to throw you a curve ball or two

Once again, love this amazing community.
u/gregmat and u/Vince_Kotchian - you folks are the real MVPs.
If you have any questions/ areas where I can help - post in the comments :)
